God’s Love We Deliver kicked off their conference with a review of the Food Is Medicine Coalition’s year, illustrated in this graphic recording.
Giving Back
Every year, each member of the ImageThink team chooses a non-profit that we believe in to donate our graphic recording services to. This year, our team was excited to support God’s Love We Deliver, a Soho-based non-profit doing amazing work providing nutritious and medically-tailored meal delivery to people who really need them. ImageThink was invited to graphic record a multi-day summit this September, and we were so moved by the organization’s innovative work that we wanted to share what we learned with all of you.
A Labor Of Love
In 1985, hospice worker Ganga Stone jumped on her bike to bring Richard Sale a home cooked meal. Sale lived with AIDS, and was too ill to cook or shop for the food he needed to be well. What began as one woman’s vision to bring comfort, love, and nutrition to one man grew in the next years into God’s Love We Deliver. Every weekday, God’s Love We Deliver cooks and delivers over 5,800 medically-tailored meals to people with conditions that make cooking or shopping for themselves too difficult, supporting communities in all five New York boroughs, Westchester and Nassau Counties, and Hudson County, New Jersey.
Food Is Medicine
Nutritious meals are as crucial to a person’s health as prescription medication-and sometimes, for the population that really needs them, just as difficult to get. That’s what organizations like God’s Love We Deliver understand. And that’s why last month, it brought together like-minded non-profits from the Food Is Medicine Coalition for the Advocacy Capacity Building Project conference.
The ACBP emphasized strategies to bring proper nutrition into Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP programs; expanding the population that the programs can reach; and giving doctors the ability to prescribe medically tailored meals as they would any other medicine. A year’s worth of medically-tailored meals, we learned, are less expensive than one night in the hospital, and can actually save patients from trips to the ER. It also emphasizes the importance of giving making those healthy meals something a person would actually enjoy eating.

From their year review, to their strategy brainstorm sessions, to their discussion with Congressman Jim McGovern-a long-time ally of the Food Is Medicine coalition-the passion in the room was palpable and resonant. This kind of holistic and human approach to medical care was inspiring. The work that organizations like God’s Love We Deliver are doing cares for people on more than a bodily level. They are not just in the business of filling bellies. They are in the business of improving people’s quality of life.
